Understanding Loneliness: Reflections from a Poem

to feel answered (a poem)

i’m laying in my room and i hear the dog
just on the other side
of the wall

is he crying?

soft / damp
hushed / wet
unaware / underneath
the hums of human machines

he has not felt
the pain of war.

but he has felt
alone before.

I wonder.
does he know who he’s crying out to?
the way a man cries out to God?

The way a man seeks answers.

The way each of us, look up
our tired eyes
wanting to
grow wider

to feel it–

to
feel
answered.

what is it
that will make us feel
answered.
